PRP Hair Restoration FAQ

PRP hair restoration consists of application of your own Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) topically and by injection into the area of thinning hair to stimulate new hair growth and improve health and texture of existing hair.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is used to stimulate and nourish follicles for hair growth. Highly concentrated plasma contains platelets that release growth factors; these growth factors have been shown to generate new hair and improve the density and health of your existing hair.

We use a local anesthetic to make the treatment very comfortable. There is minimal tenderness and mild swelling in the injection sites for 3-5 days following the treatment.
The entire treatment including preparation of your PRP in our office, cleaning of your treatment area, injection of the PRP into the scalp, and Micropen treatment of scalp takes less than an hour for most patients.

PRP has been used as thinning hair treatment in female pattern hair loss for over 10 years and recently is catching a lot of attention in cosmetic medicine due to its benefits. PRP contains a rich and concentrated mix of cytokines and growth factors which can be activated and injected into the areas of thinning hair; leading to stimulation of dormant hair follicles and hair regeneration. It has been observed that, at the very least, PRP treatment improves hair health, strength, individual hair diameter and prevents further hair loss which can maintain the current number of hairs and improve the health and quality of your current hairs; and at best induce new hair growth the degree of which varies from person to person.

We recommend one to two treatments six months apart for women and three treatments for men. You will need maintenance treatments every one to two years thereafter to maintain the results of your PRP hair regeneration treatment.

Although you will start to see improvement in hair texture, thickness of hair shaft and growth of new hairs in the treated area within two weeks after treatment, it typically takes three to six months from your initial treatment to see measurable results.

Unfortunately, the results of PRP treatment for hair regrowth are not permanent. Nothing can change your genetic predisposition for hair loss and hair loss will return if no maintenance type treatment is done. Most patients with female pattern hair loss who respond to PRP hair loss treatment, require repeat treatment anywhere between 12-24 months after their initial treatment. As with your initial treatment, it may take another three to six months to see measurable improvement in hair density. Subsequently, PRP may need to be repeated periodically depending on your individual response to PRP therapy, your genetics, the extent of your hair loss and if you are using any other adjunctive treatments ( such as Philip Kingsley Thrichotherapy Regime) with your PRP hair loss treatments. Additional treatment frequency will also depend on your hair treatment goals.

Sadly not, and this is where your PRP hair loss treatment provider selection can make all the difference!
